STEW! is a feature-length documentary portrait of the singer, songwriter, and performance artist known simply as Stew. Hailed as one of America's finest tunesmiths by publications ranging from The Village Voice to Entertainment Weekly, Stew is also the driving force behind the breakout Broadway musical, Passing Strange.
Along with his band The Negro Problem and his longtime collaborator Heidi Rodewald, Stew has released a string of addictive albums over the past decade that offers a matchless blend of memorable melodies, ribald humor, and unflinching social commentary.
STEW! chronicles the emergence of an unlikely American icon, examining the sound and vision of this Bohemian troubadour and the path he's taken in order to remain true to his calling. It is the story of one man's singular artistic journey--from Los Angeles to Europe to New York City--and the cast of characters that populate his life and songs. So throw away any preconceived notions of Broadway, cabaret, and rock 'n' roll, and acquaint yourself with the wonderful world of Stew.

What I'm trying to do is create a kind of entertainment that I would enjoy if I walked into a club. Something mature and funny. Smart and goofy. Edgy without being ugly. With plenty of sex and drug references for good measure, nice melodies, foul language, and Che Guevara jokes. Just everyday life as I see it. Stew |
